What will happen in the consultation?

The consultation will take the form of a history and examination to help understand exactly which medical condition you are suffering from. Any management plans will be discussed with you including going through any procedures, operations and the full set of associated risk factors.

Will any investigations be needed?

In order to confirm the diagnosis and plan any operative strategy it is often required to get some imaging which may take the form of an ultrasound, CT scan or MRI scan depending on the condition.
The secretaries will help arrange these investigations and explain to you where to go and what you have to do.

Will I be seen after any investigations?

Yes! It is always good practice to meet, or speak, again once all the investigations have been completed to ensure that you fully understand the diagnosis, management plan and any operations and their associated risk factors. There is lots of opportunity to ask as many questions as you like to ensure that you are fully informed about all the aspects of your medical care.

What happens after the consultations?

One of the secretaries will contact you to make sure that you understand the outcome from the consultation. The secretary will then discuss with you about dates for an operation and give you all the information required before the operation.

Will I get a pre-operative assessment?

ALL patient undergoing an operation by Mr Giles Bond-Smith will have a nurse led pre-operative assessment to ensure that are fully optimised prior to the operation.

How will I know what to do on the day of the operation?

One of the secretaries will talk you through all the timings and requirements to ensure that your operative day is as stress free as possible. It is often an early start and depending where you are positioned on the days operating list you may be able to have some water in the morning. All of this will be explained to you via the telephone and in written form.

What is your current wait time for an operation?

Approximately 4-6 weeks.

How long until I can return to work after an operation?

Depending on the operation a FIT note (sick note to stay off work) will be written for 2 weeks as standard but if the operation is more complex then the length of time of work can be adjusted
accordingly.The secretaries will help arrange these investigations and explain to you where to go and what you have to do.

When can I begin to exercise after an operation?

Nothing heavier than a kettle should be lifted for the first 2 weeks post-operatively. After 2 weeks, gentle exercise can be introduced on and then build up the exercise programme until by 6 weeks you are back to carrying out your normal physical activity plans. If the post-operative recovery is expected to be different to this then Mr Giles Bond-Smith will let you know on an individual basis.accordingly.The secretaries will help arrange these investigations and explain to you where to go and what you have to do.

When can I next fly after an operation?

Typically you are not fit to fly for 30 days after a general anaesthetic.

How much pain will I be in after an operation?

After the operation there will be some discomfort but the analgesia (pain killers) prescribed by the hospital should alleviate this. We can offer a non-opioid based analgesia regimen if this something you desire.

Do I have to spend the night in hospital after the operation?

No you do not have to spend a night in hospital if you do not wish to. Mr Giles Bond-Smith often likes to keep patients that he has operated on in hospital for one night so that he can you review them that night and then again in the morning. Please do feel free to discuss this with Mr Giles Bond-Smith if you would like to go home straight after the operation.

When will my operation take place on the day of the operation?

The order of patients on an operating list is decided several days prior to the date of the operation by Mr Giles Bond-Smith according to the type of operation, complexity and insurance requirements.

Is my BMI too large for an operation?

If your BMI is over 40 then this needs to be discussed on an individual basis. A weight loss reduction programme will be instigated and an in-depth discussion about the risk of surgery and a BMI over 40.

Do I need a GP referral letter?

Yes if possible particularly as if you do want an operation, the Hospital pre-operative team would like your current medication list and past medical history from the GP.
